Zombie Apocalypse Medicine

Screen Shot 2018-10-10 at 10.44.20 AM.pngThe Zombie Apocalypse (Medical Meeting) is about to start! Where – the great state of Arizona. The first stirrings of the apocalypse will be at the Arizona State University. I along with several of my emergency medicine colleagues will be on hand to give medical and disaster tips in preparation for our escape to the north.  Drew Harrell, Clint Kalan, Jake Jenson  and myself will present “Escape to the Grand Canyon Bugout and Disaster Medicine in the Zombie Apocalypse” at  9:00am sharp at the Memorial Union building on the ASU campus on October 18th. But that is just the start. The ZAMM 2018 meeting will feature speakers from medicine, literature, neuroscience, parasitology, psychology, law, cinema and the arts, and more!  Check out Zombiemed.org

There is a lot to get excited about, but I will highlight a couple of events that will be of interest to those in the medical community. Cameron Carlson from the Zombie Research Society is talking about Emergency Management and Response during the Zombie apocalypse.

Mel Herbert of EM-RAP fame will be discussing his Zombie themed podcast Shabam! – The podcast that explodes in your brain! – along with the podcast producers Josh Kurz and Wendy Roderweiss

In addition to the Bugout and Disaster Medicine preconference, I will be presenting on the whether our brains are hijacked by our gut microbes. In case you were wondering, all of the conference will be grounded in science, with a few forays into science fiction.

I have written about zombie microbes on this blog here: Microbes, Mental health and Zombies

And we have previously recorded a podcast about zombification and extreme environments here: Extreme Environment Encephalopathy

The lead organizers, Athena Aktipis, Pamala Winfrey, and Cristina Baciu have assembled together a remarkable website that explains this exciting event where science meets art and culture. Click below and come on October 18th-21st.
